On May 23, the ESG Shipping Awards International 2025 Ceremony & Gala Dinner brought together over 400 maritime leaders in Athens, all united by a shared commitment to building a more sustainable future. This event, held under the auspices of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy and the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping, was a powerful recognition of the maritime sector’s evolving journey, moving beyond mere compliance to embrace true ESG leadership.
The evening featured a lineup of distinguished guests, including Deputy Minister Stefanos Gkikas and Hellenic Chamber of Shipping President George Alexandratos. They spoke about Greece’s maritime heritage and its crucial role in championing global sustainability. A compelling keynote address by Björn van Roye of Bloomberg Economics explored the shifting geo-economic landscape, underscoring the urgent need for adaptability and resilience.
One of the night’s highlights was the presentation of the ESG Motivational Leadership Award to Marily Frangista and Semiramis Paliou. Both were honored for their inspirational contributions and long-standing dedication to the sector. Their acceptance speeches emphasized the importance of listening to and learning from the younger generation, and the vital role that every individual, from executives to seafarers, plays in driving change. This sentiment was echoed by Captain Panagiotis Tsakos, who reminded everyone that the core values of Greek shipping, honoring “one’s word and caring for people” which are, in essence, what ESG is all about.
The event, which concluded with a lively performance by Dionisis Schinas, was more than a celebration of awards; it was a testament to the collective spirit of an industry determined to navigate its own transformation with purpose and integrity.
